The 3 Day Chemical Breakdown Diet is a very low calorie diet, and if you pause to look at the name of this plan, the term "3 day" raises flags. People who want to lose weight and keep it off can't really expect to do it in 3 days, and to eat such low calorie amounts long term is not healthy. Is this just another fad diet?
Lowdown on the Chemical Breakdown
The premise of the 3 Day Chemical Breakdown Diet is that the diet guidelines must be strictly followed because the foods eaten on this diet work together to breakdown fat. Claims state that the results can lead to weight loss of up to 10 pounds in just 3 days. This sounds great, doesn't it? The problem is that the diet has no scientific evidence to back up these chemical breakdown claims. However, the foods allowed add up to about 750 calories a day, and that extremely low calorie content will make you drop weight fast. With that said, it is also important to note that eating less than 1200 calories a day is not recommended for any length of time and can be dangerous if done for a period of time. The problem is that some people who try this diet want to keep losing weight and continue following the plan. Such an extreme calorie restrictive diet should only be followed under the care of a doctor when a patient's life is at risk due to obesity or other health conditions.
Other Names for the 3 Day Chemical Breakdown Diet
This diet is not new. In fact, you can find it under a variety of different names all over the Internet. It's been called the:
- 3 Day Heart Diet
- Mayo Clinic Diet
- Cleveland Clinic Diet
Notice how official and health conscious these titles sound. The fact is that this diet has nothing to do with the Mayo or Cleveland clinics, and it doesn't have anything to do with a chemical breakdown. It is just a fad diet that is very low in calories.
3 Days Only
In fairness, this diet is promoted as a 3 day plan and when used as a 3 day approach to lose 5 pounds fast, it can work. Another plus is that the foods found on this plan are healthy foods with a little bit of variety. The important thing to stress, though, is that this diet should not be followed long term.

This diet is not a healthy long term approach to weight loss. It can work if you want to drop 5 pounds fast for your high school reunion, but don't be tempted to stay on it for more than 3 days. If you've got a lot of weight to lose, talk with your doctor before starting a weight loss plan. A healthy approach will provide women with at least 1200 calories a day and 1500 calories for men. Look for a balanced approach that will not only help you lose the weight, but to keep it off long term.
