The hemolytic anemias are those caused by destruction of red cells in the bloodstream by a disease process. Most common cause of severe disease is sensitization of an Rh-negative woman to the D antigen of the Rh system. This fetal disease ranges from mild to very severe, and fetal death from heart failure ( hydrops fetalis ) can occur. Hemolytic Disease of the Newborn is also called erythroblastosis fetalis.
